Code for America, Civic Tech

UX Researcher & Designer

San Francisco, Jan '16 - Dec '16

  • Through the one year fellowship I worked on the Economic Development team with the City of Long Beach to help entrepreneurs navigate the process of starting a business through a business portal. We focus our design research around ensuring we meet the needs of underrepresented users and therefore highly practice accessibility and inclusivity.

  • We have established data collection practices in the city to allow them to make better strategic process and policy decisions. The work we do with city staff drives cultural and structural change inside of government — encouraging innovation, improving tolerance for risk, and increasing the organizations capacity for transparency and engagement.

  • The fellowship is a year-long paid position with training benefits to better solidify our skill set for the civic tech career path.

  • • Led participatory workshops with city staff and end-users (entrepreneurs)
    • Prioritized features and led content strategy
    • Created an accessibility style guide that ensures the widest range of users can successfully access government products and services
    • Generated user flows, sitemaps, and designed the information architecture
    • Conducted user testing and iterated product features
    • Researched the needs of low digital literacy, low reading literacy users, non-english speaking users, and low-income users.
    • Stakeholder management
